The 34th Grand Prix Finale! It’s Night 18: The competition will hold its eighteenth night at Ryōgoku Kokugikan in Sumida, Tokyo, on August 17, 2024. This weekend in Ryogoku Sumo Hall, the long quest to find the Strongest of the Summer comes to a close. The G1 Climax 34 league round is officially over, and on August 15th, the playoffs will get underway. The top two scorers in each block will compete for a berth in the Semifinal Saturday. In the main event, Yota Tsuji and Konosuke Takeshita square off following victories over Jeff Cobb and Ren Narita, respectively, last night in Hamamatsu. For both men, it’s a complete circle return to B Block after they originally connected on the first night in Takeshita’s hometown of Osaka during AEW/DDT’s Alpha. Now, one of the two will suffer a devastating defeat in their G1 campaign, but Tsuji has the spiritual hometown advantage as he makes his way back to the area where he grew up and found his calling as a professional wrestler.
Similar to how captain and fellow United Empire player TJP turned around his Best of the Super Jr. campaign, Great-O-Khan appeared to be finished after four games in the G1, but he bounced back to win five and four, including a decisive victory over Tetsuya Naito on Monday. O-Khan’s fourth league campaign ended with a positive W:L record for the first time in his career after his victory over the IWGP World Heavyweight Champion, and the Dominator now has momentum on his side. However, he must be haunted by his league losses against Zack Sabre Jr. and Shingo Takagi, the other two men who made it to the playoffs. O-Khan will need to record two first-time victories to advance to Sunday’s finals, as he has never defeated Zack or Shingo. Takagi will feel even more confident after defeating EVIL spirits in Yokohama and taking down the enormous Jake Lee in Nagaoka while facing a known foe.
